I first saw Cambodia in 2005 on a round the world trip, loved the place, and stayed for a lot longer than I’d planned, teaching English at the Sangkheum Center for Children outside Siem Reap, a really great orphanage and education center that has been running since 2001.
In August 2007 I went back to Cambodia, and back to the Sangkheum Center to develop a vocational training and personal development program for the young adults at the center who have to leave by age 18. We have managed to put in place an exciting course including English, IT skills, and Personal, Social and Health education covering everything from safe sex to personal safety and healthy eating. The program is still being developed and even though I am back in the UK at the moment I will continue to work with Sangkheum to develop it, to offer young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds a great start in independent life, and genuine prospects for employment, study and training.
