The sounds in space are more muffled, which is closer to the accuracy shown in 2001 when everything that happened in space was silent - as it would be. There are attempts to explain more and more about the development of the Cyclons. They don't have transporters as they did in Star Trek, even though the ships have FTL. So I'm going for realism combined with nothing more than the series distinguishing itself from the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek. They had lasers in the original series, but in this one using guns just seems to fit better with the general 'grittyness' of the show. Convinced?!
