Atheism is a dirty word
From a telephone sampling of more than 2,000 households, university researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in “sharing their vision of American society.” Atheists are also the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry.

Apparently, even if Americans believe in different gods, they’re all agreed that atheists are “self-interested individuals who are not concerned with the common good”. I already knew that atheist senators in the US congress have to keep their absence of belief in a deity a secret, so this is no surprise. Watch out for this attitude coming to the UK, if our government and countless religious pressure groups have anything to do with it…
Quite Random is the blog of Nathan Nelson, a human male who lives in the UK and is not entirely sure what he's going to do when he grows up but is interested in international development, photography, secularism, technology, music and movies and other things anyone of his age would be.

scary…I remember being surprised by the attitude I received at Uni there.
Hrrmm. Most of us Americans are hiding out in the more populated areas (the corners) of the country where we carry around cell phones and don’t actually have land lines. No one calls us for our opinion about things because they are neither allowed (since we pay by the minute) or we don’t answer (because we pay by the minute). I would contend that we look like a scary lot because the only people who actually answer these polls are a scary lot. The rest of us are trying to flocate our phones when they ring and we know that no amount of prayer will help us.
"flocate" being a jazzy American term for "find".
I’ve heard that one. I couldn’t flocate my arse with both hands according to some people.
yeah that paying to answer your mobile/cell phone thing is madness. Another reason i couldn’t hack it in Vancouver.
